How to create a manga

Illustrating and drawing characters is an important (and also fun!) part of creating a manga, but not the only one. Story development, dialogs, panel layout and continuity are just some aspects that complete the creative process.

1. Plot プロット

This first step is similar to a movie script. Chapter breakdown, notes on characters, basic ideas help build the structure and clarity of the story.

2. Storyboard ネーム

In this step I visualize the story with rough sketches and dialogs. The editor checks the draft and gives feedback, sometimes requesting changes to the story. It usually takes a couple of iterations until everything is in place.

3. Rough draft 下書き

With sketches I lay the foundation for the final steps. The panel layout (koma) and composition of scenes are final at this point. Only minor changes are still possible.

4. Inking & Lining ペン入れ

With pen and ink (sometimes also brush or marker) I finalize the character outlines. The scenes are completed with backgrounds and other details.

5. Finalisation & Coloring 仕上げ

Filling the outlines with shading and texture brings the illustrations to life. I refine details and complete the manga. During the whole process (steps 1-5) analog as well as digital tools are being used.
